Projects - and non-project work

Innate supports the spectrum of methodologies and approaches to multiple project planning, from "top down" to "bottom up". In practice you may use a mixture of approaches - that's fine too. Here is a very short article on methodologies and how we support them.

Top down planning

You may run your set of projects top down. Senior management set a strategy which leads to the need for projects, which are defined, detailed and resourced. For example;

Your philosophy might be; mission statement -> strategic objectives -> tactical requirements -> projects, and you might measure how each project contributes to your strategic objectives throughout its entire lifecycle.
  • specify the basics of the project
  • pass the project description to a project leader to plan
  • project leader draws up a plan
  • ...approvals and capacity checking stages
  • detailed resourcing, given that the overall resource capacity is approved and feasible
  • regular updates and change requests top down/bottom up - measure progress and results through the project lifecycle
You may have a defined, detailed process flow and procedures to support your process.

Bottom up planning

This occurs where projects are run by individual departments, say, and the company wants to collect information on what is going on, either to provide service to its projects or to control direction.

If you introduce a new system into your organisation it is important that it has some bottom-up capability, at least so you can take on the data of projects in progress.

Again, you may have a defined, detailed process flow and procedures to support your process bottom-up.

Innate supports both

We support both methodologies because real-world business systems need elements of both! All the products in the Innate range can support you, whatever your project philosophy. Read on...
